One trick that works good is first make a smaller ponytail with a skinny hairband then gather the hair around to make a bigger ponytail. Then twist the hair around to make a bun and use a scrunchie or whatever method you want to hold the bun in place. The double ponytail keeps the bun from drooping down in the back.

I've been doing ballet for 2 months, and never officially learned how to do a bun with thick, curly, long hair. And this was super helpful! But I did add another hair tie just because my hair is THICK XD
